Three thieves chose to cast their net in a fish aquarium at a shop in Kurla (E), and took away 126 Golden Pearl Arowana, an endangered species, valued at Rs1.51 lakh, on Saturday night. The fish species is believed to be a lucky charm.
The theft has been captured on a CCTV camera installed at a building near the shop, Ocean World. Shop owner Mohammed Sajjad (39) lodged a police complaint on Tuesday.
This fish species fetches a minimum of Rs1,200 for the small fish, while a fully grown one costs Rs1 lakh. “The fish is considered a lucky charm and it also has health benefits,” Sajjad claimed.
An offence has been registered against the unidentified men at the Nehru Nagar police station.
Sajjad, a Colaba resident, said that the thieves seemed to be wellversed with fish varieties and knew the tank in which the Golden Pearl Arowana had been kept. “On Saturday , I felt the number of fish in the tank had drastically dipped compared to the previous evening's stock,“ he said.
DCP Sangramsinh Nishandar called it a “unique“ theft case.“They've taken away `vaastu' fish believed to bring luck, while ignoring 12 other varieties in the shop,“ Nishandar told TOI.

Go on a memorable journey to Kaziranga with wildlife photographer Rajesh Bedi

For a nature lover there is no greater thrill than being at perilously close quarters with wildlife. And what could be more exciting than capturing that magical moment on camera? If wildlife photography is your passion, join the Kaziranga Wildlife Photography Trail starting on November 30. This exciting six-day journey will take you to a world heritage site that is home to two-thirds of the world’s great onehorned rhinoceros.
The experience architect on this trail will be Rajesh Bedi, one of India’s bestknow wildlife photographers with over three decades of award-winning work behind him. “I have occasionally risked my life in order to obtain exceptional images,” says Bedi, who has a fund of hair-raising stories about his photographic forays into dense forests.
This will be an opportunity for applicants to lend polish to their amateur nature photography skills and the guidance comes from the best in the field.
Bedi will lead 20 participants of this trail to three of the most rewarding zones in the sanctuary for a photographer: the central zone known for the big five of Kaziranga -the rhino, Asian elephant, tiger, Asiatic wild buffalo and swamp deer; the western zone for elephant safaris and the eastern zone for water bodies.
Photography enthusiasts will get to see two more sanctuaries during this trip -Pobitora, famous for its onehorned rhino, and Gibbon sanctuary with its hoolock gibbons, the only ape species in India.
